The tarsal navicular bone helps connect the ankle to other bones that are lower in the foot. This bone gets its nautical sounding name because it has a shape that is like a small boat. The navicular bone helps form and stabilize the arch and helps us walk efficiently. Kohler’s Disease is a rare bone disorder in which the navicular bone experiences a loss of blood supply and density, causing the bone to weaken and be susceptible to compression from other bones in the foot. This can affect some children typically aged 3-7, and it most commonly occurs in boys. The symptoms a child may experience with Kohler’s Disease include pain, tenderness, swelling, and redness in the middle of the foot. While this disorder may sound scary, the prognosis is usually good: Kohler’s Disease generally corrects itself as the child matures. Until that time, the child may compensate for the discomfort they are feeling by walking on the outside of the affected foot. If you see your child walking like this or even limping, it is wise to take them to a podiatrist for an examination and diagnosis. Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

Achilles Tendon Disorders

The Achilles tendon is a thick band of fibrous tissue that runs along the back of the lower leg, connecting the heel bone to the calf muscles. When the Achilles tendon is injured, resulting symptoms may include pain, aching, stiffness, soreness or tenderness in the heel or back of the leg, enlargement of the tendon, and damage to the surrounding tissues. There are two main types of Achilles tendon disorders – Achilles tendonitis and Achilles tendonosis. Tendonitis is a typically short-lived inflammation of the tendon. Tendonosis, which can evolve from tendonitis if the former is not treated promptly, can lead to tears in the tendon and degeneration over time. What Is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.

What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Many women find that as pregnancy progresses their feet and ankles begin to swell uncomfortably. The main cause of this is a buildup of fluids in the mother that help to support the growing fetus at the same time as her circulation slows down. Symptoms usually occur during the last trimester as the uterus expands, putting more pressure on the legs and feet. This swelling, also known as edema, is usually worse in hot weather and at the end of the day. Among the ways to reduce it are to avoid standing for long periods of time, wear compression stockings, limit salt intake, keep legs elevated on pillows while sleeping, drink lots of water, and do foot exercises to improve circulation. Edema also can be a sign of certain serious health conditions, such as preeclampsia, which may cause high blood pressure and deep vein thrombosis (blood clots). If swelling appears suddenly, is present more in one foot than the other, or does not subside after resting, please do not hesitate to see a podiatrist as soon as possible for a complete exam and diagnosis of your condition.

Why Should I Stretch My Feet?

When you stretch the rest of your body, your feet can seem like an afterthought. However, there are many benefits to stretching your feet. Did you know that keeping your feet strong and flexible can prevent pain and injuries? Exercises that increase foot flexibility can improve the range of motion in your feet, making it easier to walk, run, stand, and exercise. Strengthening exercises improve the health of your foot muscles, allowing them to provide stronger support and protection to the feet as a whole. Most foot stretches are simple, usually requiring very little time and special equipment. To learn more about stretching your feet, please consult with a podiatrist.

Stretching the Feet

Stretching the muscles in the foot is an important part in any physical activity. Feet that are tight can lead to less flexibility and make you more prone to injury. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.

  • Using a foam roller or any cylindrical object (a water bottle or soda can will do), roll the object under your foot back and forth. You should also exert pressure on the object. Be sure to do this to both feet for a minute. Do this exercise three times each.
  • Similar to the previous one, take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and roll it under your foot while seated and exert pressure on it.
  • Grab a resistance band or towel and take a seat. If you are using a towel, fold it length wise. Next put either one between the ball of your foot and heel and pull with both hands on each side towards you. Hold this for 15 seconds and then switch feet. Do this three times for each foot.
  • Finally hold your big toe while crossing one leg over the other. Pull the toe towards you and hold for 15 seconds. Once again do this three times per foot.

It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising and ice and rest the foot. It is advised to then see a podiatrist for help.
